Ten-Day Bamboo Handicraft Training Programme Conducted at KFRI

A ten-day skill development training programme on bamboo handicraft manufacturing was conducted from October 5 to 14, 2026, at the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI), Peechi.

The programme was organized by the Extension and Training Division of KFRI in association with the Kerala State Bamboo Mission (KSBM) and the Bamboo Technical Support Group (BTSG-KFRI).

The workshop was formally inaugurated by Dr. Kannan C.S. Warrier, Director of KFRI. In his inaugural address, Dr. Warrier emphasized the growing ecological relevance of bamboo as a renewable, durable, and superior alternative to single- use plastics. He pointed out that promoting bamboo crafts not only drives green enterprise development but also provides sustainable income generation and self-employment avenues for rural artisans and entrepreneurs.

Throughout the 10-day workshop, participants designed and created a wide range of innovative bamboo utility and decorative craft items. The training integrated traditional craftsmanship with modern design and finishing techniques, enabling artisans to enhance both product quality and market value. Trainees also showcased their finished products and actively shared their hands-on experiences, creative insights, and entrepreneurial plans.

The sessions underscored key commercial pathways, highlighting the importance of participating in major exhibitions, such as the upcoming Bamboo Fest in Kochi this December, to access broader markets.

Training Coordinator Dr. A.V. Raghu, Programme Coordinator Dr. V.B. Sreekumar, and Training Associate V.R. Arun coordinated the sessions and addressed the participants.
